Long-term goals of the Eastern Partnership

Baku / 19.03.20 / Turan: The European Commission (EC) and the Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy put forward proposals for the long-term political goals of the Eastern Partnership program beyond 2020.

They are aimed at expanding trade, strengthening ties and deepening economic integration with Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, Moldova and Ukraine, strengthening democratic institutions, the rule of law, environmental and climate sustainability, and promoting the creation of fair societies.

The European Commission press release said that the Eastern Partnership remains an essential element of EU foreign policy. “Our proposals will further strengthen our six partner countries, reflecting common priorities and challenges,” said EU High Representative Joseph Borrell.

The press release notes that the EU + 6 partnership creates the conditions for creating a sustainable and integrated economy, ensuring the rule of law and security, establishing democratic institutions, and respecting human rights and security.

Fair societies formed through free and fair elections oriented towards citizens, as well as accountable government bodies, are necessary for democracy. Together with civil society, free, plural and independent media, they are key components of viable democratic societies.

The Commission and the European External Action Service expect member states and partner countries to approve this proposal in connection with the Eastern Partnership Summit in June 2020. —0—
