New President Elected in Armenia, Sagsyan Retains Power
Baku / 02.03.18 / Turan: The Armenian parliament today elected the new President of the country. As expected, it is the former Armenian Ambassador to Great Britain Armen Sargsyan, who in 1997 was the Prime Minister for several months.
Sargsyan was the only candidate for this position: 65 MPs from the ruling Republican Party of Armenia (RPA) and the Armenian Revolutionary Federation Dashnaktsutyun (ARF) nominated him.
Ninety MPs voted for his election, and ten were against.
According to the new constitution of Armenia, the President is elected by the parliament for one seven-year term. The office term of the current President Serzh Sargsyan expires on April 9, and the inauguration of Armen Sargsyan has been appointed for the same day. After that the old government will resign, and Armenia will completely pass to the parliamentary form of government.
Under the new constitution, the authority to manage the country passes to the Prime Minister and Serzh Sargsyan himself intends to occupy this post. -02D-
