PACE President to visit Azerbaijan
PACE President Anne Brasseur September 22-23 will pay an official visit to Azerbaijan, Turan was told in the Council of Europe.
The program of the visit has not been disclosed, but it is expected Brasseur will hold meetings with representatives of official Baku and civil society.
In May Brasseur came to Azerbaijan to attend the meeting of the Standing Committee and the Bureau of the Assembly. Then she was sorry that she could not meet with the arrested leader of the REAL Ilgar Mammadov, the violation of the rights of which is recognized by the European Court of Human Rights.
Then Brasseur said that if Mammadov was not released by her next visit, she would try to meet him again.
Since then, the human rights situation in Azerbaijan deteriorated further and many prominent civil society activists were arrested. And it all happened during the presidency of Azerbaijan in the Committee of Ministers.
So far, the Council of Europe has demonstrated its complete inability to work on improving the human rights situation in Azerbaijan. Moreover, sometimes members of the PACE act as lobbyists for the Azerbaijani authorities. -16D06-
