Reception at the US Embassy on the Occasion of American Independence Day
Baku/06.07.19 / Turan: A solemn reception was held at the US Embassy in Azerbaijan on Friday on the occasion of the 243rd anniversary of the independence of the United States.
The event was attended by officials of the Azerbaijani government, members of the country's parliament, leaders of political parties, representatives of intellectuals and civil society, as well as the diplomatic corps and international organizations.
In his welcoming speech, US Ambassador Lee Litzenberger stressed that America has supported Azerbaijan since the restoration of independence of the republic.
"For more than 25 years, the United States has supported Azerbaijan. And today, when the role of Azerbaijan is growing in the world, we are by your side," the ambassador stressed.
In turn, Finance Minister Samir Sharifov said that there is close strategic cooperation between Azerbaijan and the United States.
Azerbaijan is the largest US trading partner in the South Caucasus.
"Last year, trade between the two countries amounted to $ 860 million. To date, US investments in Azerbaijan have reached $ 13.6 billion, and Azerbaijan in the US - $ 8.2 billion," the minister said.
Azerbaijan, he added, lays hopes on the efforts of the United States in the process of peaceful settlement of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict within the framework of the territorial integrity of Azerbaijan. -06D--

On Friday, the State Security Service (SGB) issued an official statement confirming the arrest of Gahraman Mammadov, the assistant military attaché of Azerbaijan in the U.S., who was previously detained in Istanbul with 70 kg of gold. Mammadov is accused of smuggling in conspiracy with another Azerbaijani citizen, Anar Gassimov, and foreign nationals.
