Russia on PACE " Magnitsky resolution " supported only by Azerbaijan
Baku/04.02.14/Turan : The Azerbaijani delegation was the only one who supported the full complement of Russian deputies from voting at the winter session of PACE against the resolution: "Do not go unpunished the killers of Sergei Magnitsky ."
The resolution is a demand to the Russian authorities to punish all those involved in the death of the Hermitage Capital lawyer Sergei Magnitsky .
PACE recommended that the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe should connect to the investigation of the Magnitsky case .
According to voting results, 151 MPs voted "for", 25 - "against" and 10 - abstained.
Among those who voted against it , along with 16 deputies from Russia, were all present in the hall five Azerbaijani MPs - Sahib Gafarov, Rafael Huseynov, Samed Seyidov, Ganira Pashayeva, Rovshan Rzayev and one representative each from Turkey , Bosnia and Herzegovina , Hungary and Moldova.
Probably , the Azerbaijani delegation voting against the resolution came from the fact that it can become a bad precedent in the future and such a resolution can be adopted also on violations of human rights in Azerbaijan.
On the other hand, a year ago, the Russian delegation actively helped Azerbaijani deputies in the failure of the Christoph Strasser resolution on political prisoners in Azerbaijan , and now it is time to return the " debt."
Also noteworthy are several other nuances with respect to the resolution prepared by the famous Swiss deputy Andreas Gross.
At one time, when Gross was rapporteur on Azerbaijan , Azerbaijani MPs to PACE urged Azerbaijani journalists that he was "a man of Russia" and was commissioned by the Kremlin to write critical reports on Azerbaijan.
Some of these same deputies last year during a visit to the United States complained that Azerbaijan is as a "sandwich" clamped in a vice between Russia and Iran , and therefore it is not advisable to press on Baku in the violation of human rights and democracy.
But obviously Azerbaijani MPs follow the principle of "in politics there are no eternal friends and allies , but there are permanent interests."
Whatever it was, so friendly support of Russia in opposing the Magnitsky resolution does not improve the image of the Azerbaijani delegation to PACE. -06D-
