Russian Defense Ministry plans to increase the number of peacekeepers in Karabakh
Baku/21.12.20/Turan: The Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu, during a meeting with President Vladimir Putin, announced the commissioning of a block-modular military camp in Karabakh for 330 places.
He also added that it is planned to deploy 32 more modular townships by April 1, 2021. This means that the number of the temporary contingent will grow several times - from 2,000 to 10,000 people.
Officially, nothing was said about increasing the number of the contingent and its expansion will require additional coordination with Azerbaijan.
But if we consider that Shoigu announced the plans of the Ministry of Defense, this means that the issue has been agreed with Baku.
The 10,000-strong contingent for such a small region with an area of about 2,000 km is a significant figure and more indicates plans to deploy a Russian military base here.
The conditions for the stay of the Russian military in the conflict zone are noted in the statement of the Presidents of Russia and Azerbaijan, Vladimir Putin and Ilham Aliyev, as well as the Prime Minister of Armenia Nikol Pashinyan, promulgated on November 9, 2020.
According to the document, the Russian contingent consists of 1,960 servicemen, 90 armored personnel carriers and 380 units of automobile and other special equipment. According to media reports, Russia uses helicopters to cover the convoys from the air. The duration of the contingent's stay is five years, which is automatically extended for the same periods without restrictions, if none of the parties has any objections. — 0—

The European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) today issued five rulings on applications from Azerbaijan. The case of "Afgan Mammadov v. Azerbaijan" concerned the complainant's exclusion from the Bar Association. Mammadov was expelled based on a complaint filed by a colleague, which he considered unjust. The ECHR ruled that Mammadov's rights had been violated and ordered Azerbaijan to pay him €5,000 in compensation for moral damage and €1,000 to cover legal costs.
