Sweden And Finland 'Ready To Join' NATO, State Department Says
Washington D.C./30.03.23/Turan: The State Department said on Wednesday it considers Sweden and Finland "ready to join NATO", TURAN's Washington correspondent reports.
"These are two countries that are advanced democracies, Finland and Sweden. They work with NATO regularly, and hope to welcome them into NATO formally very soon," principal deputy spokesperson Vedant Patel told a daily press briefing when responding to TURAN's questions.
"We think that their joining NATO will not only enhance our security – it’ll enhance European security; it’ll enhance the Alliance security," he went on to add.
Patel's comments came as Sweden’s foreign ministry said on Wednesday it will summon Russia’s Stockholm ambassador to complain about an “attempt at interference” with the Swedish NATO application process.
Moscow earlier said joining NATO made the Nordic countries “a legitimate target for Russian retaliatory measures, including those of a military nature.”
When asked for reaction to the Kremlin's bullying of Nordic countries, Patel responded dismissively "You have seen dangerous and unsafe rhetoric come from Russia before."
