UNESCO will celebrate the 200th anniversary of the settlement of Germans in Azerbaijan
The 200th anniversary of the German settlements will be marked in 2017 in Azerbaijan under the auspices of UNESCO, said today the Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Elmar Mammadyarov at a joint press conference with the Foreign Minister of Germany Frank-Walter Steinmeier. Mammadyarov said that Azerbaijan restored monuments of German culture. In particular four churches have been restored. By the anniversary date will be restored museum «Siemens» in the region of Gadabay, and a museum of German Culture in Goygol will open.
Steinmeier expressed his satisfaction with the measures taken by the Azerbaijani government, and said that Berlin will also discuss measures for the 200th anniversary of the settlement of Germans in Azerbaijan. The first German colonies appeared in Azerbaijan in 1817. Schwab moved here from the devastated Europe after the war waged by Napoleon. The Germans lived in compact in the Annefelde (Shamkir) and Elenendorf (Goygol). In addition, the company «Siemens» was engaged in the development of the silver and gold mines in Gadabay. The Germans were deported from Azerbaijan to Kazakhstan at the beginning of World War II by Stalin's regime. -06D-
