US Ambassador Meets with PFPA Leader
The US Ambassador to Azerbaijan Robert Cekuta met with the leader of the Popular Front Party Ali Kerimli on August 23.
The meeting was attended also by the Deputy Ambassador William Gill, the head of the political department Ziya Sayed and the political adviser Susan Chelsea.
The press service of the Azerbaijan Popular Front Party said the topic of the conversation was the socio-political situation in the country, the upcoming September 26 referendum and constitutional amendments, as well as the fate of political prisoners.
In particular, the sides touched upon the new wave of repression against civil and political activists, the torture of detainees and other violations.
Until recently, nine members of PFPA, including its Deputy Chairman, have been political prisoners.
Over the past 10 days, the authorities have begun an open attack on the leader of the Popular Front Party Ali Kerimli and the party functionaries. Under the guise of a false campaign against Gulen supporters, the authorities carry out repression and arrests of unwanted people. As a result, the number of prisoners from PFPA has reached 14.
All this was the subject of discussions between Kerimli and the US diplomats. -03D-
