U.S. Follows Alizamin Salayev's Case 'Closely', State Department Says
Washington D.C./17.05.23/Turan: The State Department said on Wednesday that it will "continue to closely follow" the case of Alizamin Salaev, an opposition acrivist in Azerbaijan, who has been on a hunger strike for hundred days in protest of his illegal arrest, TURAN's Washington correspondent reports.
Salaev, a member of the Popular Front Party of Azerbaijan, was arrested in February for "hooliganism", a claim that he strongly rejects, and demands his unconditional release.
"We are aware of the reports that Mr. Salayev is on a hunger strike, and we will continue to follow his case closely," Vedant Patel, State Department's principal deputy spokesperson, told a daily briefing when responding to TURAN's question about the case.
"We remain strongly committed to advancing respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms," Patel said.
He went on to add, "And we call on all authorities to take steps that are consistent with Azerbaijan’s obligations under its own constitution and international agreements when it comes to human rights."
Yesterday, on the 100th day of his hunger strike, Salayev reportedly lost consciousness during his court hearing outside Baku.
His next trial is scheduled for Monday, May 22.
