U.S. Will Restrict Visas Of Foreign Government Officials Who Assist Fugitives
Washington D.C./22.06.23/Turan: The U.S. State Department on Wednesday announced new visa restrictions on foreign government officials and agents who intervene to assist fugitives accused or convicted of serious crimes to evade the U.S. justice system, TURAN's Washington correspondent reports.
The new policy is named “Fallon Smart", in honor of a 15-year-old Portland girl who was killed by a hit-and-run driver in 2016. The law enforcement said her suspected killer, a Saudi national, was smuggled out of the United States just weeks before his trial.
"The visa restriction policy announced today is specific to foreign government officials and agents, and their immediate family members," Secretary Blinken said in a statement. "The decision to impose visa restrictions reflects the commitment of the United States to support aspirations of fair judicial process and strengthen democracy and the rule of law," he added.
