Baku/06.07.22/Turan: The Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) is expecting worsening the situation in Uzbekistan, the representative of this organization, Alexander Kuznetsov said in Sochi at a conference on information security held on Wednesday. Kuznetsov believes that Uzbekistan was part of the region of responsibility of the CSTO.
“While there is a forecast of the development of events. Everything is extremely unstable,” he said, adding that on Tuesday, President Putin held telephone conversations with President Mirziyoyev and expressed support for the efforts of the Uzbek leadership to stabilize the situation in Karakalpakstan.
According to Kuznetsov, the CSTO believes that the situation in Uzbekistan may worsen even some time after the protests. “While everything is extremely unstable, complications are expected ... there will also be a reaction to this,” he said.
Mass protests in Karakalpakstan began on July 1 due to amendments to the Constitution of Uzbekistan, which abolished the right of the region to secede from Uzbekistan.
After the protests began, during which at least 18 people were killed, President Shavkat Mirziyoyev arrived in Nukus and proposed not to amend the Constitution. A state of emergency has been introduced in the region until August 2. --0--
