Youth Forum: How to Resist Persecutions?
A youth forum on the issue of the persecution of youth activists was held yesterday. With the participation of representatives of independent and opposition organizations they discussed the arrest of a member of the youth organization of Musavat Nigar Yagublu, a member of the civil movement Nida Zaur Gurbanli and a member of the youth branch of the Democratic Party Rasul Mursalov and pressure on other activists.
The head of the youth organization of the party Musavat Tural Abbasli reminded that Yagublu actively participated in the protests before the 2012 Eurovision contest. "By arresting Nigar Yagublu, the authorities overstepped the "red line." Even with Mirjaafar Baghirov (Head of Azerbaijan in the period of Stalin's rule) they did not show such an attitude to women," said Abbasli.
A Board member of Nida Uzeir Mammadli said that the arrest of the activist was political. He drew attention to the statement of the authorities to withdraw "illegal documents" from Gurbanli. In fact, they confiscated leaflets of the organization, which had no illegal content.
Mursalov was arrested in Zagatala, where he had gone to relax with a friend, who came from Turkey. They were accused of illegally crossing the Georgian-Azerbaijani border.
"A few days before his arrest police inspectors threatened Mursalov's father that his son would be arrested for taking part in the rally. Rasul never crossed the border. He was arrested in Zagatala, where he went with a friend to visit his grandfather," said the head of the DPA youth organization Jamil Hajiyev.
On October 5 the Balakan court began the trial of Mursalov.
The Youth Forum participants agreed to participate in the protest of the Public Chamber on October 13 to demand the dissolution of the parliament. The youths are also going to hold an independent protest rally in October.
The forum, held at the initiative of the youth organization of the party Musavat, was also attended by representatives of the youth branch of the party of the Popular Front of Azerbaijan (PFPA), the Democratic Party, the Umid (Hope) Party, the Civil Solidarity Party, the Civil Movement Nida, the Centre for National Thought, the Youth Organization of Unified Azerbaijan, etc.-06D-
