Bashir Suleymanli, the executive director of the Elections Monitoring and Democracy’s Studies Center (EMDS) who was released yesterday in accordance with the presidential decree of pardon, said he expects free more political prisoners.
"Of course, I'm a little disappointed. I would like a larger number of political prisoners be pardoned. I thought that freedom will come about 10 political prisoners. I wish that the next time, many political prisoners were pardoned," said Suleymanli after release.
Concerning the alleged charges against him, he said: "We did not commit these acts.
Such accusations as appropriation, tax evasion cannot be attributed to NGOs. For NGOs working on a grant basis, and the mechanism of appropriation of grants does not exist. NGOs cannot be accused of tax evasion, because they are exempt from VAT. Therefore unreasonable to accuse us of appropriating, tax evasion, illegal entrepreneurship. "
He believes that other NGO activists arrested on these charges should be released. "It is necessary to create in Azerbaijan normal conditions for civil society activities, for civil society is an institution number one serving development of the state," said Suleymanli.
