Kerimli: the number of freed under amnesty is false
«While our friends are in jail it is impossible to feel free," said in an interview with Turan deputy chairman of the party "Musavat" political prisoner Faraj Kerimli released today.
"It is - not an amnesty, it was a bargaining," he said, noting that statements on the release of 3.500 people on amnesty is untrue.
"This is a falsification, there cannot be 3,500 freed people. In the jail N14, where I was serving a sentence was amnestied a small number of convicts who had to serve only over a year. Most had to serve their term for 2-3 months. It cannot be considered an amnesty," said Kerimli.
He reported severe ecological situation in the jail N14, which is surrounded by stone quarries.
However, Kerimli did not complain of ill-treatment by prison staff. There was no pressure. On the contrary, the prisoners and the staff respected him. Prisons are filled with young people: drug addicts convicted of robbery. 90% of prisoners are young, said Kerimli.
He believes that his release was specifically delayed, and was released after the referendum.
Kerimli will continue the political struggle in the "Musavat" party more actively. He also filed a complaint with the European Court of Human Rights, because it considers the charges on which he was convicted are fabricated and politically motivated. He urged the public to fight against the regime. "I cannot put up with this power. It is necessary to build a democratic society in Azerbaijan," he said.
The deputy chairman of the party "Musavat" Faraj Kerimli and his non-party brother Siraj Kerimli were arrested in July 2014 on charges of drug trafficking.
F.Kerimli was sentenced to 6.5 years, and S.Kerimli to 6 years. The latter was pardoned on March 17, 2016, however, he is also seeking acquittal. Both brothers were declared by Amnesty International «prisoners of conscience».
On May 24, the Supreme Court partially upheld the complaint F.Kerimli, retrain charged with Article 234.4.3 (illegal manufacture, production, acquisition, possession of drugs) to a softer Article 234.1 (illegal purchase or possession of drugs for personal consumption), reducing his sentence to 3 years of imprisonment. -03C06--
