A preparatory meeting in the case of A.Chovdarov postponed to October 4 (UPDATED)
Baku / 20.09.16 / Turan: The preparatory hearing in the case of the former General of the Ministry of National Security, the former head of the Office for security in energy and transport Akif Chovdarov postponed for 4 October. The trial of the Military Serious Crimes Court in the case of Chovdarov chaired by judge Habib Hasanov was held in the Sabunchu District Court building.
The reason for the transfer of the postponement of the trial was the absence of Chovdarov’s lawyer Sadiq Rasulov, who was not informed in advance about the date and place of the trial. Chovdarov refused the lawyer appointed by the state.
He also stated that he did not have sufficient time to familiarize with 56-volume criminal case. According to him, 18 days allotted to him was not enough. The lawyer Cavid Rzazade in the case of another defendant Salim Mammadov said that the criminal case consists of 24 episodes, and 60 people were recognized victims in various episodes. There are 300 witnesses in the case. About 15 victims participated in the preparatory meeting.
Public prosecution in the trial support the Attorney General and the Military Prosecutor's Office of Azerbaijan. -06b--

Baku / 20.09.16 / Turan: In the Sabunchu District Court of Baku on Tuesday a preliminary hearing started on the case of the former General of the Ministry of National Security, Chief of Security in Energy and Transport.
However, the bailiffs did not let journalists into the hall. Facing protests of the press, the performers said they had been instructed not to let journalists in. This is a flagrant violation of the rule of law, for the decision to hold a closed hearing may be taken by the judge and not by the court guards.
The reason for such behavior of the bailiffs is clear - the authorities fear that Chovdarov may appeal to journalists and make statements incriminating the authorities.
Recall that Chovdarov is one of the 21 high-ranking officers of the National Security Ministry arrested for serious crimes. However, the authorities have refused to conduct a single trial of all the former officers of the MNS, and each case is isolated in a separate proceeding.
Chovdarov was arrested in November 2015 on charges of illegal surveillance by technical means (302.2), abuse of authority, which has involved serious consequences (308.1), accepting a bribe on a large scale by intimidation (311.3.4), and unlawful deprivation of liberty (145.3) of the Criminal Code.
Note that Chovdarov’s name figured in the murder of the journalist Elmar Huseynov, but the authorities did not investigate the allegations. -03B-

Baku, often called the "Caucasian Dubai," is increasingly known for systematic violations of residents' housing rights. During urban renovations and the construction of elegant new buildings, thousands of families in Azerbaijan’s capital have been unlawfully deprived of their homes. Many, recognizing the futility of resistance, settle for inadequate monetary compensation for their irreplaceable property. A minority, placing faith in the Housing Code, demand fair compensation from construction companies but often lose everything—both their homes and any form of recompense.
