Activist Claims Persecution for Posting on Facebook
Baku / 18.12.18 / Turan: On Tuesday, the Baku Court of Appeal considered a complaint about the arrest of the activist of the Movement for Democracy and Prosperity Huseyn Melik.
He was arrested on December 5 for 25 days on charges of not submitting to the police. During the meeting, he and the lawyer stated that the charge was not true, since he was taken from home. According to Melik, two people came for him - one in civilian clothes, the other in uniform.
He was taken to the 41st division of the Sabail District Police Department. There, two persons gave false testimony against him that he allegedly did not obey the police.
Melik said he was immediately taken away and he did not have time to call anyone, because his phone was immediately taken away. According to the activist, in the department he became ill and an ambulance was called there.
In court, he was assigned a lawyer at public expense. However, he refused because he did not trust the advocate, a member of the ruling New Azerbaijan Party.
Melik said he was accused by the police of insulting the President on Facebook and demanded that the critical material be removed, but he refused. Then the police called a man who could do this, ruining his phone. After that, Melik was forced to give an access code so as not to have the phone damaged. The police entered his account and deleted all the records for several months. All this testifies that he was arrested on a false accusation.
Melik said he did not expect justice from the court.
Judge Kamran Akperov, without getting up from the chair and not going out for a meeting, announced that the complaint was rejected.
Melik"s relatives said the decision will be appealed to the European Court of Human Rights. -06D--
