Afgan Mukhtarly to Appeal Violation of His Rights in Court
Baku / 18.08.18 / Turan: The imprisoned journalist Afgan Mukhtarly is not allowed to receive political literature in the prison. In addition, he is not allowed to meet with the activist of the NIDA movement Samir Asadli, who has been given a power of attorney by the journalist's family to visit Mukhtarly. Asadli told Turan IA about this.
"Books of political content from us for Afgan Mukhtarly are not given to him. Since he was transferred to the prison in late May, I have not been allowed to meet with him, despite the fact that I have a power of attorney from the family," Asadli said.
According to him, on August 17, after consulting with his lawyer, the journalist decided to appeal the violation of his rights in court.
It should be reminded that the harsh critic of the Azerbaijani government, Afgan Mukhtarly, was abducted in the center of Tbilisi on May 29, 2017, and the next day he was arrested in Baku. The authorities accused him of illegal crossing of the border and smuggling. However, the journalist himself told the lawyer that he was caught and beaten by Georgian police, taken to the border and handed over to Azerbaijani representatives.
At the border checkpoint he was put 10 thousand euros in his pocket and then dramatized allegedly crossing the border in an inappropriate place for the purpose of smuggling currency. -06D--

Baku, often called the "Caucasian Dubai," is increasingly known for systematic violations of residents' housing rights. During urban renovations and the construction of elegant new buildings, thousands of families in Azerbaijan’s capital have been unlawfully deprived of their homes. Many, recognizing the futility of resistance, settle for inadequate monetary compensation for their irreplaceable property. A minority, placing faith in the Housing Code, demand fair compensation from construction companies but often lose everything—both their homes and any form of recompense.
