Afiyaddin Mammadov, сhairman of alternative confederation of trade unions, detained
Baku/02.08.23/Turan: Chairman of the Confederation of Trade Unions under the "Democracy 1918" movement Afiyaddin Mammadov was detained on August 1. This happened after a protest action against the arrest of food delivery couriers' mopeds by the traffic police.
As the chairman of the "Democracy 1918" movement, Ahmed Mammadli, told Turan, that the detention took place at the Akhmedli metro station.
Mammadli noted that the police demand driver's licenses of A category from couriers under the pretext that the engines of mopeds exceed 50 cc. This rule came into force due to changes in legislation on December 16, 2022, when the Milli Majlis amended the Law "On Road traffic".
A joint statement of the Confederation of Trade Unions and Association of Trade Union of Couriers says that in order to receive registration plates by motorcycle drivers, a customs declaration is required. However, points of motorcycle sale do not provide such documents, because motorcycle suppliers issue them as the import of spare parts.
Owing to tax evasion by motorcycle suppliers, those engaged in courier activities suffer.
As a reminder, Confederation of Trade Unions under the "Democracy 1918" movement was established on March 1, 2022 by a group of activists. It consists of a number of industry trade unions, which are united in a common platform "Desktop". This confederation positions itself as an alternative to the official Confederation of Trade Unions of Azerbaijan, which is a pro-government structure that does not protect the rights of workers.
The purpose of the Confederation of Trade Unions under the "Democracy 1918" movement is to combat labor exploitation, provide gratuitous legal assistance to workers, restore traditions of a genuine trade union movement in Azerbaijan, encourage workers to organizational structuring and joint struggle for their rights.
In connection with the information about Mammadov's detention, the Interior Ministry said that "an investigation is underway." At the same time, the Ministry added that moped drivers will be assisted in obtaining a driver's license.
Earlier, Mammadov was repeatedly detained and administratively arrested for participating in protest actions. -03b06-
