Azerbaijan Finishes 39th in Medal Standings at Olympics
On the last day of the Olympic Games in Rio Azerbaijani sportsmen won three silver medals. They were the wrestlers Togrul Asgarov (65 kg) and Hetag Gazyumov (97 kg) and also the Cuban boxer Lorenzo Sotomayor (64 kg), who performs for Azerbaijan.
Thus, Azerbaijan finished the Olympics with 18 medals, including one gold medal, seven silver medals and ten bronze medals. By the number of medals Azerbaijan showed the best result in the history of its performances at the Olympics. However, in the overall medal standings Azerbaijan worsened its position in comparison with the London Olympics. At the Games in Rio Azerbaijan took the 39th place, while in London it was at the 30th place with 10 medals, of which two were gold.
Among the former Soviet republics, Azerbaijan ranked sixth after Russia, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Ukraine and Georgia.
Of the 18 medals won by Azerbaijan 7 were won by Azerbaijani athletes, while 11 were won by foreigners invited to the Azerbaijani national team. -06D--
