Azerbaijan Leads in Medal Standings at First European Games
On Sunday, Azerbaijani sportsmen won 6 medals - three gold, one silver and two bronze – in the European Games.
The Greco-Roman wrestler Elvin Mursaliyev won "gold" among athletes in the weight category up to 75 kilograms. In the final, he defeated the Serbian athlete Victor German.
Ayhan Mamayev won the gold medal in karate (kumite technique) among athletes in the weight category up to 84 kg. In the final match he beat Michael Giorgios Tsanos from Greece.
At competitions in karate (kumite technique) among women the winner was Irina Zaretska (68 kg).
In the final, she defeated the Austrian woman Alice Theresa Buhenger.
The silver medalist in the competition in the Greco-Roman style among heavyweight (130 kg) was Sabah Shariati. In the final he lost to Rza Kayalap from Turkey.
Another Greco-Roman wrestler Hasan Aliyev won the bronze medal, winning the match for the third place with the Serb Alexander Maksimovic.
Another bronze medal to the Azerbaijani national team on June 14 was brought by the triathlon athlete Rostislav Pevtsov.
On the third day of the I European Games the Azerbaijani team came on the top in the medal standings.
