Azerbaijan Wins First Olympic Medal
Valentin Hristov, Azerbaijani weightlifter in the 56 kg category won the bronze medal at the Olympics yesterday. This is the first medal at the London Olympics for the country, and first for Azerbaijani athletes in Olympic weightlifting.
In other sports, Azerbaijanis distinguished themselves. In men’s 2,000 meter rowing the Azerbaijani Alexander Alexandrov advanced to the quarterfinals, which will be held on July 31. Natalie Mustafayeva also made her way to the quarterfinals.
The first victory was also achieved by boxer Soltan Migitinov, who made his way to 1/8 finals. Judo wrestler Tarlan Kerimov (66 kg) finished his participation by giving way in the quarterfinals to Spaniard Sugoi Uriarte. As a result, Kerimov was satisfied with 7th place.
Judoka Ilgar Mushkiyev (60 kg) was defeated in the first battle in the 1/16 round.
Former Olympic bronze medalist in shooting, Irada Ashumova, was in 39th place at a distance of 10 m. On August 1, she will compete in shooting at targets at a distance of 25 m.
A group of 53 Azerbaijani athletes will begin their performances in the coming days.
