Baku Hosts Conference on Tolerance

In connection with the International Day of Tolerance, a two-day conference on the theme: "Further strengthening of tolerance" opened in Baku today.

The event, which takes place in the former Palace of Happiness (mansion of the millionaire Murtuza Mukhtarov), is organized by the Caucasus Muslims Office and the OSCE Baku Office.

The event was opened by the head of OSCE Office, Alex Shakhtakhtinsky. An address from President Ilham Aliyev to the participants of the event was read.

In his speech Shakhtakhtinsky said that the problem of tolerance is relevant throughout the OSCE area.

"The only way to avoid religious phobias is tolerance. However, tolerance is also important for the preservation of national values," he said, noting that in Western Europe there is a problem of anti-Semitism and religious phobias.

At the same time, there a lot of effort in the East, openly promoting hatred against the Israelis. All this makes it necessary to strengthen the fight against religious extremism.

Sheikh Pashazadeh said in his speech that Azerbaijan’s tolerance allows it to maintain stability and development of the society. All conflicts in the world arise from the crisis of moral values.

The British Ambassador to Azerbaijan Urfan Siddig also drew attention to bloody conflicts, explaining them with lack of tolerance

The further part of the event took place without the participation of the press.

On November 17-18, the participants will continue the discussion in the following sections: "The tradition of religious tolerance in Azerbaijan," "OSCE region and challenges to tolerance on its space,"

"Interreligious dialogue in a democratic society and the role of tolerance," and "Religious radicalism in the global world and the fight against it."

The participants will be received by President Ilham Aliyev today. -05C-
