Climbers from Azerbaijan Ascend another Seventhousander
Today at 6:00 a.m. four climbers from Azerbaijan, Sirkhan Mamedov, Firuz Dadashov, Rufat Gojayev and Denis Leusov began to climb the highest peak in the Pamirs and the former Soviet Union - Peak Somoni (formerly Communism Peak), 7,495 m high.
The route is of the highest category of complexity - 5B. It passes through ice and rocks. The athletes will spend several days on the Pamirs Plateau (6,500 m above the sea level) and climb to the top on a steep ridge. Opponents of the climbers will be the height, thin air, freezing temperatures and strong winds.
Last week, our climbers successfully conquered another Pamirs seventhousander - Korjenevskaya Peak (7,105).
After three days of rest, the team went to ascend a more difficult top, which will take 5-7 days.
The preliminary weather forecast for 19 August is good, the President of Azerbaijan’s Mountaineering Federation, Israfil Ashurlu told Turan. -02B-
