Baku / 15.09.17 / Turan: The Baku Appeals Court partially satisfied the complaint of the financial director of the Azadlig newspaper, the assistant to the chairman of the Popular Front Party of Azerbaijan (PFPA) Faig Amirov, sentenced to 3 years and 3 months of imprisonment.
The court applied Article 70 of the Criminal Code and replaced the remaining part of the imprisonment (2 years 1 month) by a three-year probation period, the lawyer Fakhraddin Mehdiyev told Turan. Amirov was released in the courtroom.
Recall that Amirov was detained on August 20, 2016 on charges of inciting inter-religious and inter-ethnic enmity. On April 17, 2017, new charges were brought against him for tax evasion and abuse of office. However, as a result of the preliminary investigation, articles 168.1 and 308 were dropped.
On July 24, Amirli was sentenced by the Sabail District Court to 3 years and 3 months of imprisonment and a fine of 39,000 manats. Amirov is recognized as a political prisoner by human rights activists. The international organization for the protection of journalists Reporters Without Borders condemned Amirov's arrest and called for removing the "ridiculous accusations" from him. -03B06--
