Court to Consider Appeal from Intigam Aliyev and Rasul Jafarov
On July 21, the Baku Court of Appeal will consider the appeal of the convicted human rights activists Intigam Aliyev and Rasul Jafarov.
Aliyev's defense appealed, pleading to replace the arrest by house arrest or bail.
Intigam Aliyev was arrested on 8 August 2014 on charges of tax evasion and fraud.
On April 22, he was sentenced to 7.5 years. Amnesty International recognized him a prisoner of conscience.
Rasul Jafarov's defense appealed the decision of the Court of Grave Crimes of 16 April, which condemned Jafarov to 6.5 years in prison. He was arrested on 2 August 2014 on the same charges as Aliyev. Amnesty International also recognized him a prisoner of conscience.
Aliyev and Jafarov appear on the lists of political prisoners, the release of which is required by numerous international organizations. -03B-
