Court upholds A.Abdullayev in custody
On April 10 Baku Court of Appeal dismissed the appeal of the head of the AMAY group of companies, Abdulla Abdullayev, about his arrest, and upheld the businessman in detention, according to the lawyer Akbar Bagirov .
He regards the accusations against Abdullayev unfounded, and believes that the arrest of a businessman is illegal. In his view, claims against Abdullayev refer to civil disputes.
Even despite the lawsuit, the lawyer sees no reason to hold Abdullayev in custody because he has a permanent place of residence, and does not intend to evade investigation.
Abdullayev was arrested on April 4 due to investigation conducted by the Anti- corruption Department on the basis of materials received from the National Fund to Support Entrepreneurship under Economic Development Ministry.
A lawsuit has been filed under the Articles 179.3.2 ( misappropriation and embezzlement ) and 308.2 (abuse of power.) The investigation established that Abdullayev, as head of the Supervisory Board of the commercial bank "Birlikbank", abuse power , received 3,397,000 manat as support from the Fund of National Entrepreneurship for agricultural development , but redirect them to the construction and repair of buildings of the AMAY Shopping Center.
Abdullayev used to be a businessman close to the ruling elite. When Heydar Aliyev in power, he controlled one of the largest wholesale commodity markets at the metro station "Ganjlik." Security staff by Abdullayev even participated in the suppression of opposition protests. However, after Ilham Aliyev became a president, the market was demolished, and Abdullayev had to build a new shopping center in Khatai district, in a sparsely populated area. Several years ago there was he had a lawsuit with the largest holding Azersun, which ended not in Abdullayev’s favor. –05D06-
