Eldar Hasanov's lawyers appealed to Ilham Aliyev
Baku/03.01.22/Turan: Lawyers of former Azerbaijani Ambassador to Serbia and former Prosecutor General Eldar Hasanov applied to Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev asking him to assist in stopping the "inhuman" treatment of their client.
In an open letter to the head of state, the lawyers indicate that the investigation into Hasanov's case has completed, and now the process is in the phase of final statements by the parties.
According to the lawyers, all the charges brought against Hasanov by the investigative body during the trial "fell apart."
"None of the witnesses testified against Hasanov. Those who testified against the former Prosecutor during the investigation confessed that they did it under the dictation of the investigator and refused to give that testimony," asserted Hasanov's defenders.
According to the lawyers, during the 6-month investigation over the international assignment of the Prosecutor General's Office not a single piece of evidence against Hasanov has been obtained.
On the other hand, the court rejected all 74 written and oral motions of the defense without substantiation of this decision.
Even the motions for admission of doctors and even laboratory tests to him were rejected.
According to the lawyers, Hasanov who suffers from a number of diseases, including herniated cervical and spinal vertebrae, is in a semi-paralytic condition.
They recall that the European Court of Justice in a third judgment under Rule 39 of its Regulations ordered that Hasanov be provided with adequate medical outpatient or hospital treatment prescribed by qualified doctors.
The attorneys also state that due to the lack of adequate treatment, Hasanov repeatedly lost consciousness during the trial.
To conclude, the lawyers pointed out that they do not expect "a fair decision from the court held under the full control of the Prosecutor's Office,"they ask the President to intervene and stop the "inhumane treatment" of Hasanov aimed at his physical destruction.
The appeal is signed by lawyers Javadomi Javadov, Valeh Mehrlyev, Jalil Mirzoyev and Adem Mamedov.
*Eldar Hasanov was detained on August 13, 2020, by officers of the State Security Service. He was charged under five Articles: 179.3.2 (embezzlement), 193-1.3.2 (legalization of illegally obtained funds), 308.2 (abuse of office), 308-1.1 (misuse of budgetary funds) and 313 (official forgery) of the Criminal Code.
Note that Hasanov is charged with embezzlement and misappropriation during his activity as Azerbaijan's Ambassador to Romania, Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Montenegro from 2010 to 2020.
Some observers link the case against Hasanov to his political ambitions. Hasanov himself claims to have been a victim of intra-governmental intrigues.-06B-
