Georgian Opposition Intends to Demand in Parliament Creation of Investigation Commission in Mukhtarli Case
Baku / 28.06.17 / Turan: European Georgia intends to put in the Georgian legislature the issue of establishing an investigative commission on the case of Azerbaijani journalist Afgan Mukhtarli. The party claims that an independent investigation is mandatory, as the investigative bodies in Georgia have lost public trust, reports apsny.ge.
"There is no confidence in law enforcement agencies, as they themselves took part in this shameful business. I will not speculate, but we will do everything to make this issue very heatedly discussed, and I hope that at least some of the majority will have enough common sense," the party spokesman Sergi Kapanadze said.
The United National Movement also accuses the authorities of covering the crime.
"Now they are trying to either soften the crime or cover it up and deactivate it in general, but no one will run away from responsibility, since they have very deeply got into the crime - it's one thing that there was a crime and another, when the top echelons of power and all leading political figures cover this crime and become its accomplices," the party spokesman Roman Gotsiridze said.
* Mukhtarli was abducted in Tbilisi on May 29 and handed over to the authorities of Azerbaijan. The journalist was accused of illegally crossing the border, smuggling and using violence against a border guard. The European Parliament adopted a resolution demanding the release of Mukhtarli. -06B-
