Aqil Mahmudov
Baku / 11.11.17 / Turan: Aghil Mahmudov, the head of the website www.hefteaz.info, faces criminal punishment. The reason for this was a critical article written about a pomegranate festival in the Goychay region. The publication states that the district administration compulsorily collected money from the owners of pomegranate farms to arrange the festival.
In this regard, the head of the Goychay region Mehdi Salimzadeh appealed to the court against Mahmudov. Mahmudov told Turan the head of the district filed a lawsuit under a private criminal charge under art. 147.1 (slander) of the Criminal Code. The journalist rejects the charges and believes the article was prepared in the context of public discussions.
The case was handed over to the judge of the Goychay District Court, Ibrahim Fattahov. The court session is scheduled for November 14. In case of proof of the guilt, the journalist can face imprisonment for three years.
