Human rights defender Rufat Safarov is threatened

Baku/15.05.21/Turan: Human rights activist Rufat Safarov told the Voice of America radio that he was being persecuted and threatened for his human rights activities.

“At night on May 14, I saw  a message in the on my phone. He reminded me who he is. I accepted his friendship on the “messenger”. I saw a person's face once a few months ago, and never saw it again. He asked meto meet urgently and he asked for my number," Safarov said.

The human rights activist says that he refused to meet. “He informed me that the fate of one person is being decided in correctional institution No. 9. At first he spoke to me with respect, with passion. When I persistently refused to meet, he told me that I was mocking his girlfriend, and therefore I will answer. I told him that if he didn’t leave me alone, I would go to the police.  Then he told me: "I am a man who is in prison for murder, I am not afraid." According to Rufat Safarov, this is not an everyday problem.

“I can’t say for sure that he is following someone’s instructions. I have no facts, no grounds. Anyway, I think he is a trained person. How else could he call me and invite me to a meeting. If he gets a refusal, does he slander me?"

So far, we have not been able to speak with the person who called the human rights activist. He says he has already informed service 102 of the Ministry of the Interior and wants his safety to be ensured.

The head of the press service of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, Ehsan Zahidov, told Turan that he was aware of this issue.

"Rufat Safarov's father called me, I advised him to officially contact the police. If an official complaint is filed, the police will investigate and take the necessary measures," Zahidov said.

Investigator of the Zardab District Prosecutor's Office Rufat Safarov resigned at the end of 2015 after accusing the Azerbaijani authorities of violating human rights and lawlessness in the country. After that, he was arrested on charges of bribery. In September 2016, by the decision of the Lankaran Serious Crimes Court, he was sentenced to 9 years in prison. The former investigator denied the charges against him. In 2019 he was released under an amnesty.

The Azerbaijani authorities, as a rule, reject criticism that has been voiced so far about the state of human rights in the country. The representatives of the authorities declare that all fundamental rights and freedoms are fully ensured in Azerbaijan. -0-
