Human rights defenders prepare a report on the situation in prisons
Baku / 07.05.18 / Turan: The Center for the Protection of Political Prisoners (CPPP) at today's meeting decided to prepare a report on the conditions of detention in prisons in Azerbaijan and the problem of political prisoners.
Ogtay Gulaliyev, the coordinator of the CPPP, told Turan that this is done with a view to
draw attention to the lack of quality medical care and torture of political prisoners.
The participants condemned the verdict to Alisher Khurshudov, an activist of Musavat, who was sentenced to 5 years of imprisonment and torturing the activist of the Muslim Unity, Abbas Huseynov, in the Gobustan prison.
The CPPP is investigating the motives for the arrest of religious activists Firudin Zeynalov and Shamkhal Eyvazov. The activists also intend to continue the campaign to treat political prisoners and in particular: Afgan Sadygov, Elnur Farajev, Elchin Amiraslanov, Sahil Rzayev, Abulfaz Bunyadov, Jabbar Jabbarov, Ruhullah Akhundzade, Gozal Bayramli, Afgan Mukhtarly, Shamil Abdulaliyev, and others.
Three new members were accepted at the meeting in CPPP: writer Zumrud Yagmur, Zafar Ahmadli, and Alovsat Sadygly. The CPPP also condemned the start of a criminal case against human rights defender Tale Khasmamedov. -06D--

President of the European Parliament Roberta Metsola has invited Azerbaijani economist and political prisoner Professor Gubad Ibadoglu to Strasbourg to attend the 2024 Sakharov Prize award ceremony. The invitation, delivered by Member of the European Parliament Michael Bloss at the COP29 climate conference, comes as Ibadoglu remains under house arrest and prohibited from leaving Azerbaijan.
