ECHR began communication on the complaint of Emin Huseynov
Baku / 07.05.18 / Turan: The European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) started a communication on the complaint of Emin Huseynov, former chairman of the Institute for Reporters' Freedom and Safety (IRFS), to deprive him of his Azerbaijani citizenship.
Huseynov, fearing an unreasonable prosecution in the criminal case against a number of local and foreign NGOs following the arrests of prominent human rights defenders in August 2014, was forced to seek asylum in the embassy of Switzerland, which at that time was the OSCE Chairman-in-Office.
For 10 months he was forced to hide in the embassy, and during this time the Swiss authorities negotiated the release of Huseynov.
The activist was released and left Azerbaijan by the plane of the Swiss Foreign Minister in June 2015, who arrived in Baku to participate in the opening ceremony of the European Games.
Before his departure, he was deprived of his citizenship.
The applicant in the ECHR complaint notes that he was forced to renounce his citizenship and sees in it violations of Article8 (right to respect for private and family life), Article. 10 (freedom of expression), Article 13 (right to an effective remedy), and the Article 18 (limits on the use of restrictions on rights) European Convention on Human Rights and Freedoms. The ECHR sent questions to the government of Azerbaijan. -06D--
