Ilgar Mammadov Needs Medical Examination and Treatment by Foreign Specialists

Ilgar Mammadov has serious health problems and his treating doctors are abroad, the lawyer Fuad Agayev advocating the rights of the leader of the REAL movement told Turan.

“We want the Penitentiary Service to create conditions for his examination and treatment by foreign specialists. In this regard, Azerbaijan has international obligations,” the lawyer said.

According to him, Mammadov has always had health problems while in prison. “But he did not want to make it public,” said the lawyer. According to Agayev, the most serious health problem is in Mammadov's back.

“On March 22, we received information about the aggravation of his illness. He hardly reached the telephone in the prison and informed his wife that his pain had intensified and he could hardly move,” Agayev said.

In connection with the festive days off, the lawyer was not able to find out whether Mammadov was receiving medical care and whether he had been transferred to a medical institution.

Ilgar Mammadov was arrested on February 4, 2013 on charges of organizing riots in the Ismayilli region. He was sentenced to 7 years. The European Court of Human Rights found Mammadov's arrest politically motivated and decided that he should be released.  -03B06-
