Interior Ministry Denies Reports of Torture in Police over Rahimov

The representative of the Ministry of Internal Affairs denied the allegations of torture against the editor of the portal Realliq.info Ikram Rahimov in the Sumgayit police office. The representative of the press service of the Ministry of Internal Affairs Orkhan Mansurzadeh called these messages lies and blackmail.

According to him, Rahimov was prosecuted and sentenced to 1 year in prison for defamation on the basis of a claim submitted as a private criminal charge and filed by a businessman.

“So the statements of this man that he had been tortured by the police are groundless. Those who spread these messages try to deceive the public opinion,” Mansurzadeh told Turan

Recall that on 25 November Sumgayit City Court found Rahimov guilty under Article 147.2 (slander on someone’s ommitting a grave crime) of the Criminal Code and sentenced him to 1 year imprisonment.

The basis for the claim was Rahimov’s article in the newspaper Hurriyet, in which he accused the owner of the trade network Ujuz Market Vugar Galandarov of bribing the chief executive of Sumgait Zakir Farajov. Rahimov’s lawyer said that after the trial his client was taken to Sumgayit police and under torture demanded an apology to the head of Sumgait in front of the camera.   -05B06--
