Media Rights Institute requires the immediate release of Mehman Huseynov
the conviction of the blogger Mehman Huseynov to 2 years in prison is an indicator of the desire of the authorities to destroy the remnants of the defeated freedom of expression in Azerbaijan, reads the statement of the Media Rights Institute. The suit against Huseynov was initiated by the Ministry of Internal Affairs and the verdict has been oredred.
Huseynov's arrest is linked to his reporting on the blog "Sancaq" and revelations of corruption in the higher echelons of power.
"This verdict once again refutes the statements of the authorities in Azerbaijan that no one is arrested for freedom of expression, that a moratorium on the application of Articles 147 (defamation) and 148 (insult) of the Criminal Code.
The arrest also shows that the authorities did not even try to disguise the violation of fundamental rights and freedoms," reads the statement.
The MRI encourages the authorities to immediately release Huseynov, to ensure the freedom of expression of each person. -06D-
