Mehman Huseynov`s Complaint of Torture to Be Considered
The Sabail District Court will consider the complaint from the journalist Mehman Huseynov, Director of the Institute for Reporters' Freedom and Safety, of torture, the lawyer Elchin Sadigov said. The hearings chaired by Judge Ayten Aliyeva are scheduled for 16.00 on March 27.
The lawyer recalled that on January 10 of this year the blogger after the trial on the administrative case over him stated that he was tortured in the 22nd police precinct of the Nasimi district police department. He was brought there after in the evening of January 9 he was actually kidnapped by people in civilian clothes.
In this regard, the defense appealed to the Baku City Prosecutor's Office to investigate the fact of torture. However, the prosecutor's office refused to open a criminal case. Now the defense has filed a complaint with the court against this decision of the prosecutor's office.
Huseynov's allegations of torture against him served as a pretext for filing a libel suit against him in private criminal proceedings. The plaintiff was the head of the Nasimi police Musa Musayev.
In the course of a hasty trial accompanied by gross procedural violations, including not providing the due time for the defense to prepare for the final speech, Huseynov was sentenced to two years in prison. Many international organizations condemned the sentence and assessed his punishment as appointed for his blogging and human rights activities. -06D--
