New Lawyer for Journalist Fuad Abbasov Appealed His Detention in Moscow

Baku / 05/24/19 / Turan: The defense of the rights of journalist Fuad Abbasov detained in Moscow on the eve was joined by a new lawyer, Chairman of the "Europe-Asia" Moscow Bar Association, Teyub Sharifov.

In a telephone conversation with Turan, he said that yesterday he had written an appeal against the taking of the journalist into custody in connection with the alleged violation of the migration legislation of the Russian Federation.

According to the lawyer, the offense imputed to the journalist is unreasonable. Fuad Abbasov had a residence permit in Russia, allowing him to stay on the territory of the Russian Federation until 2023. However, the residence permit was revoked, while Abbasov himself was not informed about it.

According to the lawyer, after the arrest, Abbasov was presented with a ready text of his testimony. However, signing it, Abbasov made a postscript that he does not agree with the content. The defender does not exclude that at the time of interrogation the journalist may have been pressured.

"I am surprised at the "prompt" consideration of the case in the Khimki City Court on May 16," said the lawyer.

Asked whether Abbasov could be deported before the end of the appeal proceedings, the lawyer replied in the negative.

* Journalist Abbasov became known to the general public in 2015 after speaking at a talk show on Russian TV channels in connection with the discussion of the destruction of a Russian military aircraft in Turkey. Abbasov was invited as a correspondent for the Turkish agency Ihlas to present the position of Turkey. Later, Abbasov participated in talk shows also on issues relating to Azerbaijan.

Recently, Abbasov has criticized some Diaspora organizations of Azerbaijanis for insufficiently upholding the interests of compatriots, accused them of working with Armenians and announced the creation of a party of Azerbaijanis in the Russian Federation. -06D--
