New Old Intourist

The hotel Intourist was opened in the Sabail district of Baku on May 5. It is a copy of the Intourist hotel (so-called Old Intourist) demolished a few years ago.

The new five-storey building has 150 standard and deluxe rooms, Spa facilities, a library, a conference room and a restaurant.

The former hotel was located near Azneft Square and was the hallmark of Baku in the Soviet period. The new building was built a little further from the previous place.

About 10 years ago, Old Intourist was privatized and the new owner did not find anything better than to demolish the building and replace it with a primitive new block of flats, which occupied part of the roadway and is still empty.

Old Intourist was built by the renowned architect Alexei Shchusev in 1934. In 1979, the building was included in the list of protected sites as an architectural monument. It got its name after the beginning of the 1970s, when a great hotel Intourist (so-called New Intourist) later renamed into Azerbaijan was built in Lenin Square.

In 2005, the Old Intourist was severely damaged by fire and fell into disrepair. -02D-
