Opposition activist goes on hunger strike in jail
Baku/13.02.23/Turan: Opposition activist Mutallim Orudjev went on hunger strike in SIZO-3 on February 12.
He was arrested after being readmitted from Germany in June 2021.
He was sentenced to 7 years of imprisonment in Azerbaijan on drug trafficking charges.
According to lawyer Nemat Kerimli, Orudjev began his hunger strike to protest against his not having access to a doctor.
He has lung problems and is being held in a cell where many people smoke, which worsens his condition.
Orudjev is being held in the penitentiary service detention centre No 3.
"He has high blood pressure, chest pains and meningitis. Yesterday he sought medical help for the last time, but did not receive it and went on hunger strike as a sign of protest," said a member of Orudjev's family.
It was not possible to obtain comments from the penitentiary service.
It is to remind that Orudjev was an active participant in protests in Germany held by political emigrants. However, he was not granted political asylum and was returned to Azerbaijan.
All political emigrants deported from European countries are imprisoned in Azerbaijan on drug or hooliganism charges.-03B06-
