Restrictive amendments are made to the Law on Freedom of Religion

Members of Parliament today adopted restrictive amendments to the law on freedom of religion, which are aimed at preventing the spread of religious extremism.

According to the speaker of parliament, Oktay Asadov,  the adopted amendments  are to regulate the proliferation of religious audio and video materials, and literature, as well as the goods and products.

The amendments provide that all literature of religious content and the goods must be  have  control stamps of the  Committee to Work with Religious Organizations.

The exported goods  of religious nature will be certified and equipped with control stamps. In addition, religious products will be sold only in specialized shops that are certified by the relevant executive authority.

During the discussions, some MPs stressed the need to fight with carriers of harmful sects who walk in short pants and wear beards; from these statements,  it can be concluded that the object of the attacks are Salafis (Wahhabis).

Other deputies voted against the amendments noting  that import of  restrictions  for the "harmful literature" will not give a desired effect, since all this information is available on  the Internet. --17D—
