Seven Opposition Activists Detained Before Rally Sentenced to Administrative Arrests
Baku / 24.09.17 / Turan: Seven activists detained on the eve of the Saturday rally of the National Council of Democratic Forces (NCDF) are subjected to administrative arrests. As reported by the member of the Presidium of the Supreme Mejlis of the Popular Front Party of Azerbaijan (PFPA) and NCDF Irada Nariman, six activists were sentenced to 15 days of administrative arrest, and another was sentenced to 10 days. All of them were found guilty of not submitting to the police.
A member of the PFPA Khatai district department Etibar Mammadli was detained on September 21, when he distributed leaflets with an appeal to come to the rally. On September 22, he was arrested for 15 days.
On September 22, the head of the party's organization department, Sagif Gurbanov, was taken to the Sabail district police department. The district court sentenced him to 15 days on charges of disobeying the police. The chairman of the PFPA youth committee, Ilham Huseyn, the chairman of the Surakhani district PFPA organization, Bahruz Hasanli, a member of the PFPA Supreme Council, Emil Salimov, and an activist Agil Maharramov were sentenced to the same terms. Another member of PFPA, Nijat Nizamov, received 10 days of arrest. According to Nariman, the rest of more than 50 detainees were fined.
Nariman said that all the decisions on administrative punishments will be appealed in local courts and after the completion of the domestic mechanisms of proceedings, it is expected that applications will be submitted to the European Court of Human Rights.
The Ministry of Internal Affairs has not yet commented on the statements about the arrests of opposition activists.
The action under the slogan: End for Corruption, Freedom for Political Prisoners! was carried out at a stadium in the Yasamal district of Baku on September 23. Its participants demanded an investigation of the facts set forth in the international study on money laundering from Azerbaijan through companies registered in the UK. -06D--

Last night, three earthquakes occurred along the Armenia-Azerbaijan border with magnitudes of 4.8, 3.0, and 3.8, according to the Republican Center for Seismological Service of the National Academy of Sciences of Azerbaijan. The Ministry of Emergency Situations reported no information about any destruction or casualties as a result of the earthquakes.
