Shiites mark the beginning of the mourning month of Muharram
November 5, begins a month of mourning of Muharram marked by the Shiite Muslims. The main date for this month is the 10th day called Ashura. On this day in the year 680 near the city of Karbala (modern Iraq) in an unequal battle with the forces of the Umayyad, Imam Hussein - the grandson of the Prophet Muhammad and the son of Imam Ali, was killed.
During Muharram, in countries where Shiites are the majority or a significant portion, people do not hold celebrations or weddings.
