State of Jahangir Hajiyev's Health Sharply Worsened in Jail, His Sister Reports
Baku / 09.09.17 / Turan: The state of health of the former chairman of the Board of the International Bank of Azerbaijan (IBA) Jahangir Hajiyev has sharply deteriorated in Prison # 13. Turan was informed about this by his sister Amina Hajiyeva on the evening of September 30.
On the evening of September 26, J. Hajiyev was imprisoned in a punishment cell and went on a hunger strike to protest. Since then, lawyers have not been allowed to visit him.
According to A. Hajiyeva, on Saturday, relatives received information from sources in the prison that J. Hajiyev became ill and he called a doctor. However, the prison leadership refused to send doctors to him, A. Hajiyeva said. At the same time, J. Hajiyev continues his hunger strike.
She noted that J. Hajiyev already had serious health problems and this was stated by the doctors of the International Committee of the Red Cross. A. Hajiyeva expressed concern for her brother's fate.
The lawyer Fakhraddin Mehdiyev, in turn, recalled that he waited at the entrance to the jail on Friday from 12.00 to 17.00, but he was not given a meeting with J. Hajiyev under the pretext that "the room for lawyers' meetings is occupied".
Since the imprisonment in the punishment cell, the lawyers have not seen J. Hajiyev. The lawyers regarded this as a violation of the right to defense.
It was not possible to receive comments in the Penitentiary Service.
In 2015, major financial irregularities and capital outflows abroad were revealed in the IBA. The former head of the IBA J. Hajiyev was sentenced to 15 years of imprisonment. He however did not recognize himself guilty. Together with him, former heads of a number of IBA branches were sentenced to prison terms. -06B-
