Supreme Court of Azerbaijan to Consider Complaint of Bayram Mammadov
The defense filed a cassation appeal to the Supreme Court of Azerbaijan on the case of the NIDA activist Bayram Mammadov. The lawyer Elchin Sadigov told Turan about this. The case will be considered by the judges under the chairmanship of Farhad Kerimov.
The date of consideration of the case has not been determined yet. According to Sadigov, the defense insists on the termination of the criminal proceedings on justifiable grounds. In addition, the cassation complaint raises the issue of recognizing the violation of Mammadov's rights under articles 3 (prohibition of torture), 5 (the right to personal liberty and safety), 6 (the right to a fair trial), 8 (the right to respect for private and family life) , 10 (freedom of expression) and 18 (limits on the use of restrictions on rights).
* Activists of the NIDA movement Bayram Mammadov and Giyas Ibrahimov were detained the day after they painted political slogans on the monument to Heydar Aliyev in the center of Baku. However, they were accused of illegal drug trafficking on a large scale and sentenced to 10 years' imprisonment each.
Local and human rights organizations have recognized them as political prisoners. Amnesty International has called both activists "prisoners of conscience". -06D-
