Supreme Court Rejects Complaints of Convicts on Nardaran Case-1

Baku / 01.03.18 / Turan: On Thursday, March 1, the Supreme Court of the country, under the chairmanship of Shaheen Yusifov, considered and rejected cassation appeals of the leader of the movement Muslim Unity Taleh Bagirzade, deputy chairman of the People's Front Fuad Gahramanli and 9 other convicts in the Nardaran case-1.

Only two of the convicts, Abbas Huseynov and Abbas Guliyev, were brought to court.

According to the lawyer Neymat Kerimli, the judge announced only the final part of the decision. For this reason, the motivation for the decision was not clear.

The defendant Abbas Huseynov said in his speech that the arrests in this case had a political and custom character.

In turn, the defense focused on the fact that in the actions of the convicts there was no crime and all the evidence of the charge was obtained under the torture of the arrested.

"This court decision will be filed with the European Court of Human Rights," the lawyer said.

Recall that on November 26, 2016, the Ministry of Internal Affairs conducted a military operation in the village of Nardaran with the use of weapons. There was a raid on a private house, where a religious ceremony was held as part of the Maharramlik mourning.

As the Nardaran prisoners convicted of this case claimed, the police broke into the courtyard of the house and started shooting. Then four local residents and two policemen were killed.

The police presented this fact as evidence of the terrorist activities of believers and members of the movement Muslim Unity.

However, during the trial, the detainees claimed that the policemen were killed by the fire of their colleagues, and the Nardaran had no weapons at all.

During the investigation, more than 70 people were arrested and convicted in the framework of three trials for long terms of imprisonment. They were found guilty of preparing for the seizure of power, an attempt to overthrow the state power, illegal storage of weapons and other serious crimes.

International and local human rights organizations have recognized convicts on Nardaran cases as political prisoners. -03B-
