The court again refused to mitigate the punishment to the oppositionist
Baku / 29.01.18 / Turan: On February 16, the Garadagh District Court considered the appeal of the Adviser to the Chairman of the Popular Front Party, Mammad Ibrahim, on the occasion of changes in the criminal legislation, said his son Turan Ibrahim.
Mammad Ibrahim was convicted under Article 221.2.2 (hooliganism with resistance to the police) for 3 years of imprisonment. At that time, the maximum sanction of the article was 5 years imprisonment. However, at the end of 2017, the Criminal Code was amended, and the upper limit of punishment for this Article was reduced to 4 years. With this in mind, Ibrahim asked to review the punishment he had been assigned. However, Judge Jeyhun Gadiyev rejected the oppositionist's request, leaving the verdict unchanged.
In connection with serving 1/3 and ½ of the term, Ibrahim had previously applied to the court to mitigate the punishment and transfer him to a colony-settlement. However, these applications were rejected. Human rights organizations have recognized Ibrahim as a political prisoner. -06B -
