Baku/25.12.13/Turan : On Wednesday, December 25, Nasimi District Court of Baku at 11.00 in a closed session will consider the petition of the lawyer of the head of the Center for Monitoring Elections and Democracy Training (TSMVOD - abbr.) Anar Mammadli to replace preventive measure of arrest for three months by house arrest.

On Tuesday, the U.S. Ambassador to the OSCE Daniel Baer issued a statement in which it called for the immediate release of Anar Mammadli for the period of the trial.

Two days earlier, on December 23 Baku Appeals Court rejected the appeal from Mammadli against his arrest, and upheld the trial court's decision .

The court explained its decision by saying that Mammadli "may impede the investigation and hide from it," the defendant's lawyer Rashid Hajili told Turan.

The defense considers these arguments untenable. At the court, they filed a motion to change the measure of restraint for house arrest.

In late October, prosecutors opened a criminal case against TSMVOD on charges of tax evasion, abuse of authority and illegal business.

On December 16 Mammadli was arrested on these charges.

Mammadli denied the charges and said the criminal case was political and was related to monitoring and evaluation by its organization of the presidential election on October 9. The harassment of Mammadli began immediately after the presidential elections, which according to the TSMVOD report, were considered undemocratic.

Amnesty International has recognized Mammadli prisoner of conscience and has demanded his immediate release from custody.

More than 160 well-known representatives of civil society of Azerbaijan demanded the release of Mammadli, condemning his arrest. -0 -
