The Court Leaves Khadija Ismailova behind Bars
The Baku Sabail District Court today rejected the petition of the journalist Khadija Ismailova to change the measure of restraint and release her under house arrest.
As the correspondent of Turan reported from the courtroom, the colleagues and community activists warmly welcomed Ismailova at the courthouse. The hearing was held behind closed doors.
According to the lawyer Elton Guliyev, the defense declined the judge Elshad Shamayev, who decided to arrest Ismailova.
“We do not believe that the judge that made the decision to arrest her will now take a fair decision. Khadija Ismailova at the trial said that the decision on her arrest or release is not accepted in court. However, the struggle for the rights of Khadija will continue and the decision will be appealed,” the lawyer said.
* Khadija Ismailova is charged under Article 125 of the Criminal Code (incitement to suicide). She was arrested on the basis of statements of Tural Mustafayev, whom she had allegedly driven to suicide. Khadija Ismailova rejects the accusations and says that this is due to her professional activities. -16D
