The Court of Appeal left the trade union activist under arrest
Baku/10.08.23/Turan: Today, the Baku Court of Appeal (BCA) considered the complaint of the chairman of the Confederation of Trade Unions under the Movement "Democracy 1918" Afiyaddin Mammadov for administrative arrest for 30 days. Despite the fact that the trial was open, journalists were not allowed to attend the trial. The court staff stated that "this is the instruction."
According to the lawyer, Mammadov pleaded not guilty under Articles 510.1 (petty hooliganism) and 535.1 (disobeying the police) Code of Administrative Misconduct.
Mammadov said that he was held in the 26th police station for more than 20 hours, without being allowed to invite a lawyer. Moreover, on his behalf, the protocol was written that he allegedly refused a lawyer and someone else signed this protocol for him. Nevertheless, the court rejected the appeal of the pro-union activist.
Mammadli was detained on August 1 and the next day the Khatai court of Baku fined him 500 manats, finding him guilty under Article 528.1 (Failure to comply with the requirements of the court executor) Code of Administrative Misconduct. On the same day, the Yasamal District Court arrested him for 30 days.
The Interior Ministry said that Mammadov was detained due to non-payment of a debt established by the court.
In the "Democracy 1918" Movement, Mammadov is associated with a protest action by couriers for food delivery. They demanded to return to them the scooters seized by the police after innovations in the rules of the road.
Mammadov, being the head of the Confederation of Trade Unions under the Movement "Democracy 1918", actively advocates for the labor rights of couriers and employees of other spheres.

Baku, often called the "Caucasian Dubai," is increasingly known for systematic violations of residents' housing rights. During urban renovations and the construction of elegant new buildings, thousands of families in Azerbaijan’s capital have been unlawfully deprived of their homes. Many, recognizing the futility of resistance, settle for inadequate monetary compensation for their irreplaceable property. A minority, placing faith in the Housing Code, demand fair compensation from construction companies but often lose everything—both their homes and any form of recompense.
